Improving the Diagnostic Confidence of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis

thesis
posted on 2023-02-16, 03:28 authored by Hayley BarnesHayley Barnes

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is a form of interstitial lung disease (ILD) caused by inhaled exposures. Diagnosis is difficult because exposures are not well-known and CT scan features often overlap with other ILDs. Misdiagnosis leads to inappropriate treatment and worse patient outcomes. This thesis aimed to improve diagnostic confidence by addressing how doctors assess exposures and CT scans. This included a standardised HP exposure questionnaire and an online searchable database which more accurately identifies those with HP. In addition, artificial intelligence algorithms were created to better identify HP features on CTs. Together, these resources help doctors improve the diagnosis of HP.
