Improving targeted lipidomics to elucidate lipid pathways in Type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease

Lipids are a broad range of small molecules that are associated with nearly all biological processes. These important molecules have rapidly gained interest as the field has advanced in the past decade due to improvements to mass spectrometry and chromatographic technologies. In this thesis, we developed and improved our lipidomics platform to better examine these lipids and applied them to two Australian cohorts to explore their relationship with type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. This thesis details the relationship between the plasma lipidome and these diseases.
