Tumours of the anterior skull base, although often small and benign, disproportionately worsen patient wellbeing due to effects on vision, hormonal balance, and headache. Using a relatively novel technique where instruments and cameras are passed through the nose, these tumours can be removed safely and effectively with less collateral damage than traditional brain surgery. Using this technique on over 650 patients, the factors that influence outcomes and patient wellbeing were discovered for the first time. This roadmap through anterior skull base surgery provides new clarity for patients and their clinicians and will improve each patient’s journey through skull base surgery.
