Identification and management of functional gastrointestinal disorders can be complex where a number of other conditions share the same symptoms, however management strategies vary. Ideally, patients are managed in a multidisciplinary team environment, rather than heavy reliance on the gastroenterologist. The use of protocols combined with clinical expertise have shown how experienced nurses can identify and optimise appropriate management strategies including novel non-pharmacological therapies. In addition, several tools were developed for the detection and pro-active management of constipation in the acute hospital setting.
