Prevention through Design (PtD) is a novel safety management concept that aims at reducing risks of hazards early in the life cycle of construction projects. This research embraced this concept and proposed a proactive safety management (i.e., PtD) method for crane operational hazards, leveraging two cutting-edge technologies: pathfinding algorithms and building information modelling (BIM). The results indicate that the PtD method enabled systematic, proactive, and automated controls over crane operational hazards and facilitated early engagements of hazard information in preconstruction activities.
