IMPACT OF WEATHER ON COMMUTER CYCLIST’S TRAVEL BEHAVIOUR

This thesis assesses the adaptation of commuter cyclist’s day-to-day travel behaviour, particularly in response to changes in weather. Results show that commuter’s cycling volumes were influenced by changes in rain, temperature and wind. Commuter cyclists in different cities had different sensitivities toward changes in weather parameters. The weather, activities before or after work and availability of end-of-trip facilities were found to highly influence commuter’s cycling decisions. Results reveal that various social and psychological factors, including attitudinal beliefs and the key social groups, impacted commuter’s cycling decisions. The findings are used to identify practical suggestions to encourage commuter cycling.
