This thesis is a religio-cultural history of Florence in the years 1419-1443, during which Popes Martin V and Eugenius IV were forced to locate their papacies in that city due to a variety of religious and political factors. It traces the impact of these papal residencies, and it argues that this important period has been thus far understudied by historians; its conclusions are therefore a re-examination of the prevailing scholarly consensus.
