Hickean Transformation

This thesis is a critical examination of John Hick’s interpretation of religion. Hick claims that there is evidence that the major religions are equally effective in bringing about transformation from self-centredness to Reality-centredness. I argue that Hick’s account of salvation is multiply flawed: the behaviour of religious saints is not evidence for the transformation that Hick postulates, religions do not have the goal that Hick claims, and Hick’s theory requires rejection of most of the doctrinal claims of all of the world’s major religion.
