High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein is a pro-inflammatory like cytokine with plausible role in myriad of neuroinflammation mediated pathologies including epilepsy. Epilepsy is a devastating neurological disorder and cognitive decline is among the prevalent neurobehavioral comorbidities associated with epilepsy. However, the role of HMGB1 on epilepsy induced cognitive impairment is not well reported. This PhD thesis investigates the contribution of HMGB1 protein against epilepsy and related cognitive decline in adult zebrafish and suggest that HMGB1 has a plausible role in developing cognitive impairment post-epilepsy. Hence, therapeutic manipulation of HMGB1 might be beneficial against epilepsy and related cognitive decline.
