Membranes based on graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) were developed and characterised using computer modelling and simulation techniques. Various membranes modified with water and ions were examined and the optimum materials conditions were determined. The optimal membrane demonstrated ~1300% enhancement in its mechanical properties compared to the unmodified membrane. In addition, formation and thermo-responsive behavior of the membranes were investigated, and the unsolved question regarding the origin of difference in properties of the G- versus GO-based membranes were resolved. Altogether, the results achieved in this research will assist researchers and industry in designing membranes with improved properties.
