Granule Breakage in a Controlled Shear Field - Modelling and Experiments

Wet granulation is a widely used technique to produce particle aggregates in many industries including detergent, pharmaceutical, agricultural product, food, and specialty chemicals. In wet granulation, a liquid binder is used to agglomerate fine particles. In high-shear wet granulation, breakage and attrition of aggregates play an important role. However, the breakage and attrition processes are the least understood among all rate processes of wet granulation. In the present study, to better understand the breakage and attrition phenomena, experiments and simulations were performed to study the effect of formulation properties and operating parameters on the breakage behaviour of preformed granules.
