This thesis puts into question the idea of moderation as the limit of ethics in relation to the politics of asylum. It argues that in response to humanitarian need, it may be necessary to go beyond the moderate and to practice a politics of gracious welcome. It does this by examining the works of Hannah Arendt, Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida.
