Physical activity is important for bone health, but the most important aspect may be the ground impacts that occur during running and jumping. This thesis examines the relationship between impact physical activity and bone health throughout life. A new method of measuring ground impacts from physical activity is investigated, which can further clarify relationships of activity and bone health. This thesis also shows that impact exercise programs affect bone structure and bone strength differently across the lifespan. Additionally, a home-based impact exercise program is established to be practical, safe and potentially beneficial in women who are at risk of fractures.
