The current study was designed to answer the question: can hypnosis can make you do things you do not want to do? The existing results are mixed and the research designs flawed. Free will was tested by using hypnosis with participants who either did or did not want to quit smoking, but were prepared to let researchers try to 'make' them quit. Participants who did not want to quit, did not completely quit, but did reduce their smoking. Participants who did want to quit also reduced their smoking, but not by more than participants who did not want to quit.
