In this thesis, a framework for real time control (RTC) of stormwater biofilters is developed, to eliminate the risks posed by faecal microbes in stormwater harvesting and reuse. By integrating modelling and laboratory experiments, a model was developed for microbial removal in biofilters, and it was modified and validated for RTC evaluation and selection. Two RTC strategies were developed and tested through laboratory experiments, and two additional strategies were conceptualised and assessed in modelling scenarios. This study presents the first stepping stone toward RTC of stormwater biofilters, demonstrating that RTC can help to deliver safe water for harvesting and reuse.
