This thesis presents interpretive and performance considerations for a violinist preparing Frederick Septimus Kelly's Violin Sonata in G major. The work's dedicatee, violinist Jelly d'Aranyi, is investigated, and her significance in relation to Kelly and his sonata established using sources including the composer's as of yet unpublished diaries. D'Aranyi's performance style is determined through analyses of her personal circumstances and recordings. This information is then applied to Kelly's sonata, with specific examples provided, thus, enabling a twenty-first century violinist to present the work in an informed manner.
