Cancer remains a global health challenge, with an ongoing need for effective treatments. In this study, serum folate binding protein (FBP) was employed to disrupt the uptake of essential folic acid required for the rapid growth of cancer cells. We demonstrated that FBP at micromolar concentrations induced apoptosis, a programmed cell death, in human cancer cells and inhibited tumour growth in mice. Moreover, our gene expression study of FBP-exposed cancer cells and pathway analysis of differentially expressed genes provided valuable mechanistic insights into the cytotoxic effects of FBP on cancer cells via the activation of specific biological pathways.
