This research explored how early childhood educator practices enable or inhibit children’s compassion towards different groups of humans and non-human animals. I engaged in discussions with ten educators and by analysing the data, I generated ten themes about educator practices that enable or inhibit children’s compassion. These practices include role modelling, storytelling, reading books, using play and everyday moments, mindfulness, Acknowledgement of Country practices, interactions with non-human animals and collaboration with families. Educators shared different views about children and their ability to respond compassionately towards others, as well as the purpose of early childhood education and the role of educators.
