Exploring Daily Dynamic Social Exchange Processes: A Leader-Follower Fit Perspective
I explored daily dynamic social exchange processes between leader and follower. The results indicated that once a follower's daily need for resources was satisfied, receiving additional resources from the leader became less valuable, eventually reducing their felt obligation to reciprocate or gratitude towards the leader. This in turn negatively influenced their daily in-role performance, engagement and relationship effort towards the leader. Theoretically, these findings contribute to the leader-member exchange, social exchange, and person-environment fit literature. Practically, my findings guide practitioners towards needed leadership training initiatives, the effective use of resources, and a method to develop and maintain high-quality leader-follower relationships.
