Nickel-based superalloys produced by direct energy deposition (DED) are typically characterised by the formation of large columnar grains with strong <001> texture along the build direction, which results in poor and anisotropic tensile performance. To address this longstanding problem, a newly developed hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) method called rolling-assisted DED has been used in this project to fabricate Inconel 718 (IN718) superalloy samples.
