Engineered lining system of a waste containment facility restricts migration of contaminated water from the facility and safeguards surrounding groundwater. This research analysed the hydrothermal behaviour of typical engineered liners exposed to sustained elevated temperature. The study has found that double liners with nearly dry leak detection system, installed between the liners, can significantly reduce heat flow through the liner. The outcome of this research suggests that the use of liners can be broadened as thermal barriers and improved lining design methodology can be adopted for efficient thermal management in a waste containment facility.
