This thesis examined MRI accuracy in early prostate cancer diagnosis. MRI scans were compared to biopsy or prostatectomy specimens in more than 1000 men. This thesis analysed factors responsible for influencing Prostate MRI accuracy. Artefact and small tumours were found to play a minor role in inaccurate scans. The major factor in diagnostic accuracy was the experience of the reporting radiologist. The use of gadolinium contrast did not change the diagnostic accuracy. Non-contrast scans show promise as a faster more cost effective test in the early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
