This thesis examines four research questions relating to the economics of blood including an assessment of interventions for increasing donations, whether the age of blood at transfusion impacts on costs and quality of life, whether national clinical guidelines designed to reduce unnecessary transfusions were effective in cardiac surgery and if the guidelines reduced variation in care.
