This thesis comprises of three self-contained, but related, chapters that examine the
economic, social and political basis of development in Bangladesh. All studies use data from
secondary sources for empirical analysis to examine the topic. The first chapter examines the
long-term effects of a female stipend program on education, marriage, fertility and labor
market outcomes of women. The second chapter shows the effects of increasing female
education on assortative marriage, female autonomy and child‘s health. The final chapter
explains how economic development is also closely related to political dynamics of a
country.
