This thesis reports findings of a qualitative investigation into English teacher use of Facebook for professional learning in their daily lives. Findings contribute new insights into the contentious topic of teacher professional learning in our contemporary world. This work reveals knowledge about ways teachers use online, social media spaces such as Facebook to expand connections to colleagues, experts and cutting-edge information for informal, personally- and contextually-relevant learning. It shows English teachers drawing on Facebook’s text-rich content to reconstruct teaching approaches and contemporise traditional literature teaching. It contributes valuable new knowledge about ways teachers manage tensions around using Facebook and professionality.
