Light-matter interactions play an important role in photonics. The coupling of photons with lattice vibrations in dielectric crystals, the so-called phonon polaritons, offers a new electromagnetic mode and a novel approach for the light control at the nanoscale. But it is relatively difficult to manipulate phonon polaritons by a conventional electrical method. This thesis provides a chemical strategy for the tuning of phonon polaritons. This method can directly act on the lattice structure of crystals and hence effectively change the characteristics of phonon polaritons, connecting chemistry with photonics.
