This thesis develops the science and engineering behind novel diagnostics for measuring blood fibrinogen concentration on paper. It aims to quantify their sensitivity, determine their mechanisms and understand their limitations. These diagnostics are designed to be rapid, simple to use and cheap so that medical personnel can easily determine wherever critically bleeding patients have low blood fibrinogen concentrations or not. Hence, it can allow these patients to receive life-saving fibrinogen replacement therapy (FRT) at the site of injury and save millions of lives a year.
