This PhD research investigated the implementation of emerging two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides in next-generation strain sensing systems in civil practice. Compared with traditional strain sensors, the sensors based on these novel atomically thin materials can provide higher performance regarding strain sustainability, resolution, responsivity and sensitivity due to their unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties. The fabrication, transfer, strain engineering and heterostructure formation of these two-dimensional materials are studied and realised, which pave the way for their ultimate application as new-class strain sensors.
