One of the biggest problems facing the world is how to store and distribute renewable energy in way that is profitable and environmentally friendly. A possible solution to this problem is storing this energy as a chemical fuel like ammonia. However, the technology that is currently available for synthesising ammonia, (the Haber Bosch process) requires extreme, energetically demanding conditions. Electrochemical synthesis is an alternative approach, theoretically capable of producing ammonia under ambient conditions. This work attempts to understand how the reaction conditions can be modified to facilitate this process.
