Exosomes together with their microRNA (miRNA) have been discovered as important biomarkers in the field of cancer and various diseases, particularly focusing on diagnostics. They have been extensively researched due to the ability to reflect the condition of a disease based on quantifying the levels of specific exosomes found in various bodily fluids, and identifying particular components in their cargo. Traditional methods for exosome detection require them to be first isolated and characterized, before the exosomal cargo can be extracted and detected, making the whole process very complicated and time consuming. To address this issue, my PhD research was aimed to develop a label-free nanomaterial-based electrochemical biosensing platform for the detection of exosomes and exosomal miRNA to fully exploit exosomes’ diagnostic potential for the detection of diseases.
