Election promises are a central feature of contemporary democracies. Recent literature has developed our understanding of election promises, finding that parties issue a large amount of promises during an campaigns and the party(s) elected govern largely fulfill their promises. Despite the importance of election promises to representative democracy, we know little about election promises in Australia. This thesis addresses this gap by studying election promises in Australia from 2010-2022. This thesis also advances the comparative study of election promises by presenting novel analysis of promise keeping during an unexpected event and the media coverage of election promises.
