Dual-mode stormwater-greywater biofilters: technical performance and aesthetic preferences

Biofilters are a plant-soil system constructed in urban streets to clean stormwater. Unfortunately, biofilters struggle to clean stormwater following long periods of no rain. Communities have also reported that they think biofilters are ugly. To address these issues, this thesis explored dual-mode biofilters. A dual-mode biofilter could clean stormwater in wet periods and greywater in dry periods. The choice of plant species was found to be important for a successful dual-mode biofilter design. Also, providing people information on biofilters would likely help improve community perceptions of them.
