Type 1 diabetes is a prevailing disease that has a significant need of additional adjunctive therapy that does not increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. Recent studies have demonstrated that MC5R has a role in glucose uptake and homeostasis making a potent and selective MC5R agonist a potential treatment option for Type 1 diabetes. This thesis focuses on validating MC5R as a target for glucose uptake and discovering novel MC5R compounds with suitable pharmacological properties that have the potential to be developed as therapeutics. These findings are expected to assist in identifying the best candidate to be used in clinical research.
