My thesis “Diabetes, Hypertension, and Inflammation, the Trio Mediating Diabetic Retinopathy” investigated the impact of hypertension, and hypertensive diabetes on the initiation of damage to the retina and its vasculature, in addition to assessing the immune system throughout the body, and locally within the retina. I demonstrated potential mechanisms underlying the initiation of retinal pathology, and the protective effects of two known therapeutics perindopril and valsartan, in addition to the demonstration of a protective effect of a new therapeutic, finerenone, against hypertensive diabetic mediated damage to the retina.
