This study has demonstrated the development of a novel patterned porous polymer (polyHIPE) material suitable to the requirements of neural lineage responses during peripheral nerve regeneration. These materials display mechanical properties similar to peripheral nerve tissue and retain sufficient porous to allow perfusion. Modifications to the porous surface of the polyHIPE via series of micropatterned topographies demonstrate control over nerve outgrowth in the direction of physical cues. These data demonstrate the biocompatibility of these patterned polyHIPEs and their suitability for the further development for peripheral nerve regeneration.
