Laser speckle produced by illuminating an optically rough surface records unique surface information is applied to study material deformation. A high level of speckle correlation is achieved, thus enabling the development of novel optical sensors for versatile non-contact and non-destructive strain measurement for materials testing and structural health monitoring.
