This thesis addresses the increasing need for an accurate depiction of traffic states in large scale traffic networks. A potential macroscopic traffic flow model, i.e. the cell transmission model (CTM) that can incorporate a comprehensive lane changing prediction model is successfully developed by accurately estimate and predict real-time traffic states for multilane highways in such a way that the simulation result is a consistent and coherent model with the field data. This improved representation of traffic flow in macroscopic simulation tools, has the potential to support traffic engineering practitioners in making better evaluations of potential traffic control measures or infrastructure adjustments.
