Development of Porous Alginate-NCC Adsorbent for Adsorption of Methylene Blue Dye

thesis
posted on 2017-07-03, 04:42 authored by KOK BING TAN
Polysaccharide-based adsorbent is developed as a potential alternative to activated carbon for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye. In this study, the adsorption performance of three materials, namely microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) and alginate on MB dye are evaluated. MCC is used unmodified, while NCC developed into self-assembled NCC flakes. Meanwhile, alginate-based hydrogel adsorbent is developed by compositing with NCC and porogen. Among these materials, alginate hydrogel loaded with NCC and porogen showed the best adsorption performance, and is practical to be packed into adsorption column.
