Perovskite solar cells have emerged as an exciting renewable energy technology in converting solar energy to electricity. This technology has shown an unprecedented rapid rise in power conversion efficiency in recent years. The commercialisation of this technology requires further improvement in the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. This thesis presents the use of various electron microscopy and X-ray based techniques to study the fundamental microstructural properties of photoactive perovskites and their effects on solar cell performance. The findings in this thesis provide an improved understanding of structure-property relationships in photoactive perovskites, paving the way towards further material optimisation.
