Detection and treatment strategies for influenza viruses with reduced susceptibility to baloxavir marboxil
Viruses with resistance to an antiviral drug limit the treatment options for ill patients and may circulate globally and cause widespread resistance. This thesis examines influenza viruses that are resistant to the antiviral drug baloxavir marboxil. First we developed detection methods to identify influenza viruses with baloxavir resistance. We then studied the impact of baloxavir resistance on how effective antiviral treatment was in the ferret model. Finally, we used mathematical modelling to estimate the impact of antiviral treatment of influenza and drug resistant viruses at a population scale.
