Detecting and understanding urban illicit discharges by utilising newly developed low-cost and IoT-based technologies

thesis

This PhD study suggested and validated a systematic approach to identify and correct the urban illicit discharge issues in the separated stormwater sewer network of our cities. The proposed approach is fully supported by the modern low-cost sensing and large volume water sampling techniques. By having a same amount of budget, the proposed systematic approach introduces better spatial and temporal detection coverage than the conventional method, which successfully found more potential illicit discharge sources.
