Development of a compact, low-cost, and high-performance reader for reading the chipless RFID tags is believed to be key for making chipless RFID technology a commercial reality. This dissertation aims at providing a total solution for this real-world technological challenge by overcoming the practical, engineering, scientific, and cost-related issues of the chipless RFID systems. Several UWB passive and active RF components are designed and implemented from scratch, and various novel techniques to improve the performance of the individual components as well as the sub-systems are proposed. Finally, three UWB frequency-domain RFID readers are implemented, and their performances are evaluated.
