This thesis investigates the representations of cultures and cultural conceptualisations across texts, visuals and tasks in the locally developed and internationally marketed English textbooks currently used in Vietnam. It is based on TEIL, Cultural Linguistics and semiotic approach as the main theoretical and analytical frameworks. The findings reveal the lack of cultural diversity, limited focus on cultural reflection and the local Vietnamese and British cultural conceptualisations predominantly instantiated in the local ELT and international sets respectively. The thesis proffers a novel research methodology and insightful implications for researchers, teachers and students of English and other languages.
