Crucible of Dreams: Gallipoli as Myth in the Performance of Australian National Identity

The Centenary of Gallipoli in 2015, affirmed Gallipoli as the pre-eminent narrative in the performance of Australian national identity. Whilst a substantial body of research has examined Gallipoli in various modes of cultural discourse, mainly as history, little research has analysed its performance as myth. This study argues that the special status in Australia of Gallipoli and its embodied Anzac Spirit, can be understood in its performance as a myth, in particular as Australia’s national foundation myth. The research demonstrates an original methodology and arguments of relevance to the study of nation, national myths, cultural studies, history, Australian studies and Performance Theory.
