Construction of Simulation-Based ECMO Educational Suite

thesis
posted on 2023-03-17, 00:42 authored by REZAN ADNAN MOH'D AL-JAFARY
My project involves building a simulator for clinical staff to practice a complex medical procedure known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO provides temporary mechanical support for patients with severely compromised heart and/or lungs. The procedure involves draining the patient’s blood outside the body where it gets supplied with oxygen and then pumped back to the body via large tubing. ECMO is life-saving but highly-technical and risky. Developing the necessary skill-set is essential to perform ECMO safely and effectively. The project explored building and testing a simulator acting and reacting like an ECMO patient for clinical training to acquire competency.
