Chronic liver disease is a leading cause of death in Australia, increasing by 60% in the last two decades. Viral hepatitis is responsible for up to 60% of these death and are predominantly managed in the community. This thesis presents a world first community screening study to identify those at greatest risk with viral hepatitis. This study demonstrated that screening with non-invasive technology is cost effective and lifesaving. The data presented here suggests that rates of severe disease in the community is greater than previous estimated and area for future intervention.
