The focus of this PhD is on advancing our understanding of cognitive dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). SLE is a multisystem autoimmune disease mainly affecting women of childbearing age. Despite being common in SLE, cognitive dysfunction, or thinking and memory problems, are poorly understood. This thesis examines patterns of cognitive dysfunction in SLE, evaluates a practical screening tool, examines clinical associations including medications and comorbidities, explores the symptoms patients experience and the impact on their quality of life. My findings have clinical and research implications in regard to the screening, assessment and management of this underrecognized disabling condition.
