Despite its rich tradition, Islamic thought has paid relatively little attention to ethics in clinical settings. This study has sought to clarify key features of an Islamic bioethics and to explore the nature and content of decision making in a Muslim health care system. Islamic ethics has deep similarities with, and some key differences from, Western bioethics. Health professionals in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan struggle with tensions generated by globalisation and the rapid pace of change. Western and Islamic perspectives have a great deal to offer each other and fruitful dialogues between them are both possible and necessary.
