Stroke is a debilitating disease with immense global impact. Emerging yet conflicting evidence suggests neutrophils have diverse roles that may contribute positively or negatively to the brain after stroke. This experimental study characterised the impact of neutrophils on the brain after mild and severe ischaemia. This study found that varied inflammatory states were evident after stroke. Moreover, neutrophils altered the morphology of brain-resident microglia, but did not affect functional cognitive outcome.
