Bioprospecting of Streptomyces species derived from mangrove soil in Malaysia for anti-Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus activity

Streptomyces are a group of bacteria known for their contribution to medically important drugs including the antibiotics. The work presented in this thesis, focuses on identifying Streptomyces bacteria collected from the less explored mangrove forest soils in Malaysia as sources of future antibiotics. Among the Streptomyces assessed, Streptomyces sp. strain MUSC 125 stands out as a promising candidate. The study shows biologically active compounds of Streptomyces sp. strain MUSC 125 as capable of stopping the growth of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, one of the disease-causing bacteria for which limited treatment options remain to date.
